A Baseball Summer
in Pittsburgh

With July's MLB All-Star game in PNC Park as the focal point, the whole city of Pittsburgh is spending more time on baseball than ever before (even with the Pirates playing so poorly.) The Senator John Heinz Pittsburgh Regional History Center has a super sports museum, and their summer of ’06 lineup is specially tailored to baseball in many different forms and formats.

The first event was a luncheon on June 2 at the Sports Museum (1212 Smallman Street in Pittsburgh’s Strip District) celebrating the Pirates' 1971 World Series victory. It featured team members and a preview of FSN Pittsburgh’s upcoming show on the champions.

Running through the summer is an exhibit of photographs of Roberto Clemente by former Pirates team photographer Les Banos. There are more than 40 images of ‘The Great One,” some never displayed before. Along with this unique photo exhibit is a special online exhibit developed by the Smithsonian Institution highlighting Clemente’s life and career. The exhibit is on display at the History Center. Also visit Beyond Baseball: The Life of Roberto Clemente, a bilingual interactive website.

Forbes Field still holds a special place in the hearts of many Pittsburgh fans. On July 7, a Pennsylvania state historical marker was placed on the site of the last standing remnant of Forbes Field.

On August 11, Greenlee Field, former home field of the legendary Negro League Pittsburgh Crawfords received a state historical marker. That event began a series of public programs about the Negro Leagues held at the Heinz History Center. The Center also expanded its Negro Leagues gallery.
